What this is: The Be In My Band Project is an online experiment in forming a band. What I want to do is create music with people, without ever meeting in person to play. In the past I have been in a band, but was never really comfortable with contributing much musically, or writing my own songs. For this project I sat down writing and recording songs, a process I, surprisingly, never have really done before. I really liked the concept of the band the Postal Service, where the members mailed each other their in progress songs. The other member would add to it and mail it back. This was done out of necessity, but I am interested in doing it intentionally, when it is not completely necessary, removing all physical contact with others. Sure, there is certainly a chemistry between people all creating music together in the same room, but I wanted to see if creating that same chemistry was achievable in a different way.

How it works: I started with recording two starts of songs. I posted a few ads on Craigslist about the project, hoping to reach out to musicians. Fairly quickly, I had multiple responses from people who were interested. The idea is that we would send files back and forth to one another, adding parts as we go. The two songs I recorded consisted of guitar tracks, bass and drums from a vintage drum machine. I was also open to people sending me completely new starts to songs which I could add to.
